The Early 90's - My Refusal to Move On

I came of age in the early 90s. That is when I developed my taste in music, movies, men, you name it.

That said, I just don't get today's pop culture. I would rather listen to old SWV, Escape, En Vogue than Destiny's Child. I am still a Mariah Carey stan and she has not sounded good since Music Box.

Whitney Houston will always be the reigning pop diva to me. Beyonce who?

Anyone remember Jodeci boots?

Maybe I am getting old and cantankerous. I don't know. I JUST DON"T GET IT.

What's with this new character Drake? Why is everyone so hyped about him? Who can understand a word Lil' Wayne is saying. Did you hear he has to girls pregnant at the same time; Lauren London (actress, ATL) and singer Nivea. Really, Lil' Wayne got it like that?

I am protesting. I refuse to move on from the 90's. I am looking forward to the En Vogue reunion tour. Denzel Washington will always be that dude. Whitney Houston can STILL make a comeback. Darn it, I believe!! I believe!! As a matter of fact, from heretofore, I will only use slang of that time period.

This fly girl, tender roni will stay chillin' at the crib while ya'll are illin' on these new school unoriginals. The old school is all that and a bag of chips. Living Single was the BOMB. It's my prerogative to be to legit to quit. My love for the 90s is crucial, CRUCIAL!

Did I miss anything? LOL What are your favorite things from the 90s?

Group Hate

I have noticed a phenomenon I would like to term group hate. It's like a person, let's use celebrities, that everyone (media, public, etc.) decides is unlikable. Every mean vile and generallyunacceptable thing is then said and about the public pariah.

For example, Michael Vick. Okay we know he committed a crime against dogs,** insert moment of silence**, for which he was sentenced to 23-months. Let me emphasize that I know nothing about football and had no knowledge of who Michael Vick was prior to his arrest. I understand why he was arrested and he certainly deserved jail. You can't operate an illegal gambling ring and get away with it. BUT, he paid his debt to society yet some refuse to let the man live his life. God forbid he had married his adoptive stepchild.

Ohhh snap. I didn't just go there, right? Because Woody Allen did the most abominable thing I can imagine (allegedly) and he still makes movies, big stars still star in them and most people don't say boo about it.

Less, notorious is Star Jones. I have read the most vile things about her on the internet. REALLY vile. It is acceptable, why? She got a little diva on The View? God forbid she have a little confidence unlike another View co-star that shall remain nameless that puts her ignorance on display. This co-host is always expressing how "sho'nuff grateful" she is to be hosting. I like this host, btw, but that constant groveling kills me. 

Last, let me discuss MC Hammer. It has been over a decade since his bankruptcy but people still crack jokes, as if, they were not sporting Hammer pants circa 1990. MC Hammer has been making strides in the music biz behind the scenes yet people treat the brother like he is dancing for tips on the Subway.

He owns his own label Oaktown Records and has a show Hammertime to debut on Sundays on A&E.

I think this universally acceptable hate-fest is the modern day equivalent of a public hanging. People are angry and frustrated and need that scapegoat to vent their misdirected frustration on. Am I saying that it is not okay to dislike these people? No, hatersgonna hate. . .ballers gonna ball. . .lovers gonna love . . wait let me stop because we know R. Kelly is the artist we love to say we hate but secretly love.

I am saying that how long does the hate fest continue. When is someone who has fallen from grace allowed to regan their dignity. Even a public hanging has a finale. Too bad the subject doesn't get a comeback.

Jennifer Aniston VS Angelina Jolie

How long is before talking about your ex sounds desperate and unfruitful? For Jennifer Aniston approximately 3 years. That is how long it's been since her divorce from Brad Pitt. She is STILL talking about it.

In December issue of Vogue, Jennifer Aniston responds to remarks made by Angelina Jolie in an earlier magazine. Jolie stated that she couldn't wait to get to work on the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith because she and Brad were falling in love, only one glitch, Pitt was still married to Aniston.

"There was stuff printed there that was definitely from a time when I was unaware that it was happening," Aniston says. "I felt those details were a little inappropriate to discuss. That stuff about how she couldn't wait to get to work every day? That was really uncool.".SOURCE

Really Jennifer, still? Hey I get it. Breakups are hard, public breakups are harder but when can you politely say to someone...GET OVER IT!!!!! BTW, I never liked Friends. I was a Living Single girl myself. Never got the appeal of Aniston, don't get the appeal of Angelina. Plus Brad Pitt hasn't been hot since Interview With A Vampire.

Personally, if I were Aniston I would feel insulted if 3 years after a breakup all any interviewer would want to talk about is my ex. IDK why I am even writing about this. Slow news day I guess.

**Sidenote** I think Jennifer Aniston could totally take Angelina in a fight. Hell hath no fury than a woman scorned!

Billy Dee Wiiliams VS Denzel Washington

I remember when I was a little girl all of the older women would swoon over Billy Dee Williams. I guess I was just too young to get it. I watched Mahogony thinking why does this guy have a perm plus I never have understood the logic of the 'stache (a really thick moustache)but i digress.

1972 Lady Sings the Blues and 1975 Mahogony made Billy Dee a movie star and a cultural icon. In his peak, Willams was referred to as the black Clark Gable.

Most people in my age bracket may know him as Lando Calrissian from Star Wars- Episode Five: The Empire Strikes Back.

I did not now that he is an accomplished painter, whose paintings have sold in the tens of thousands.

My new school comparison is Denzel Washington of course. Denzel, Denzel, Denzel! The only man that can make me forget TJ Holmes. LOL

 

I fell in love with Denzel as Xavier Quinn in The Mighty Quinn (1989). Good Lord, that man in that white soldier's uniform. Anyway, I fell in love again watching him portray the too cool Bleek Gilliam in Mo' Better Blues (1990). I could go on but you can see where this is going.

I was watching a news show that explained that the many prominent African Americans in other arenas, such as sports, film, media, made it more acceptable for white Americans to accept an African American as President of the United States. Denzel has achieved the highest honors in his field. The 1989 Oscar for Glory and the 2002 Oscar for Training Day. He was chosen People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive in 1996.

He has been married to wife Pauletta since 1983. They met on his first TV movie Wilma (1972). Loves it!

Assume that I am not biased toward one actor or another. Tell me now, who does it better?

Modern Day VS Old School - The Men

There are always icons of cool for each decade that dominate popular culture. Whether in music, film, or stage these figures command respect for their standout talents as well as their ability to shape popular culture.

Philip Michael Thomas is best known for his iconic portrayal of detective Ricardo Tubbs, opposite Don Johnson's Sonny Crockettt. Crockett and Tubbs were the 80's dynamic duo. Instead of caped crusaders, each donned white jackets with rolled-up sleeves and skinny ties. Hey don't laugh. it was the 80's.

PMT, as he is known, is also an established musician having produced many albums over the years. He currently resides in Florida. His latest work includes being producer and co-creator of a Broadway musical Sacha that is slated to go national soon.

Terrence Howard is best known for his Oscar nominated portrayal of a down-on-his-luck pimp, Djay in Hustle and Flow. I loved him as Quentin in the Best Man. Howard makes being bad so good to watch.

Howard is also a self-taught musician, playing piano and guitar. A bit of trivia; Howard has a degree in chemical engineering.

 

Both these men are of mixed-ethnic ancestry. PMT is Native-American, African, American, and Irish descent. Terrence Howard's parents both are biracial.
