The First Dude of Cool Passes - Paul Newman

One question, have you ever seen Cool Hand Luke. In the film, Newman plays a down on your luck convict that becomes the hero of the clan. Take this scene from the movie. Luke is playing a game of cards with the inmates and bluffing his way through. The kicker is Luke does not have a good hand but he wins. The other inmates deride the losing convict stating that Luke had beat him with nothing. Luke replies: "

"Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand."

Through escape, recapture and even death, Luke is the man.

That role personifies the cultural myth of Paul Newman. Through the miracle of TCM and AMC, I have had the chance to fall in love with the movies that made eighty year olds swoon back in their heyday. My personal favorites are The Long Hot Summer (1958) and From The Terrace (1960).

Paul Newman was that cool cat. Handsome, debonair, and cool. He was a big hit with the ladies starring on screen with the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Joanne Woodard, who would become his second wife.

Newman spent his life also devoted to philanthropy. The proceeds from his Newman's Own brand foods go to children suffering from cancer. He also developed the Scott Newman Foundation after his son died from drug-related causes.

The world has lost a treasure and cultural icon but through the miracle of film we will always have his voice, likeness, and cool.

*sidenote* Newman's own dressings are really good. LOL

Dieting Sucks Part Deux

In part one of dieting, I ended my rant with nice footage of Cookie Monster singing my favorite food song. here.

Today, I discuss a waking moment of weakness in my diet war.

I was at a networking event on Thursday for the Diversity Leadership Forum. There were presentations, clever repartee, and dinner. The meal consisted of cajun chicken, sauteed vegetables, and some mash potato-like substance. Being in professional company, I left about half the food on my plate. Also, I knew I would have to detail all of that in my food journal. Nothing looks worse than listing a ton of food and visualizing all of the actual calories you have consumed in a day. During the key note speaker's address, dessert was served. It was strawberry cake.

The serving size was small, which is a good thing for the diet, bad thing because I'm still hungry. Afterall, I only ate half of my dinner. But the kicker comes when the wait staff, after running out of cake with half of my table served, brings out a chocolate chip cake. So the woman, who is from a financial service company, gets a HUGE slice of this white chocolate covered cake with chocolate chips.

This woman only takes about two bites of this cake. I of course, seeing her bigger more delectable cake only had a few bites of mine. I had dessert envy. At that moment, I wondered what would happen if I stuck my fork in her cake and ate a big chunk of it. Would she laugh it off, get angry, or call security?

I listened to the very longwinded speaker, sulking and sipping my iced tea. You can't serve cake to a dieting woman. Now that's just cruel.

Satirical Take On Satire? Now I'm Confused

Jon Stweart and Stephen Colbert recreate the New Yorkers constroversial Barack/Michelle cover. I guess their point is to relay how crazy this campaign has become with that satirical humor that is their trademark, but everytime I see this sort of stuff it just doesn't sit right with me. Like Robert Downey Jr in blackface in Tropic Thunder, regardless of intent, it's still friggin' blackface. 

But take a look and judge for yourself.

Jennifer Hudson - Album Review

In one word, this album is - hot! Let me put this into perspective. I don't buy music. It all sounds the same, no ingenuity. The last album I purchased was Alicia Keys, As I Am. I pre-ordered J-Hud. This alone should illustrate the high expectations I had for this release.

Jennifer Hudson's self-titled debut is unexpectedly good. I mean really, really good. With a big voice like Jennifer's I am sure the producer's wrestled with, should we harness it or let that puppy loose? This album does a good job of finding a happy medium.

My standout cuts:

If This Isn't Love - This song, penned by, Brian Seals, Terry Thomas and Theron Thomas, is an awesome hit begging to be the next single. It's a catchy, sweet melody that shows a softer side of "THE VOICE" that is Jennifer Hudson. It's seriously the kind of song you hear, place on repeat and never finish listening to the album, because you're trying to learn all of the words. Okay, don't act like I'm the only one who does this.

We Gon' Fight - I was all prepared for this song to be something and then it turned out to be something quite unexpected. I read that this song was produced by Tank. Tank's, hotness aside, this song is good like greens and cornbread. Ha! Hey, that's what I think of when I think of something that's down home good. This song is down home good. It's a love song with a churchy feel. I love it.

I'm His Only Woman - This song is a duet with Fantasia. Enough said. These two powerhouses really complement each other, surprisingly. This song is like woman-to-woman" a la Betty Wright, redux.

Jesus Promised Me A Home Over There - As I listened to this album, I was wondering when "Effie" was gonna show up. Well Jennifer definitely takes us to church on this one. "THE VOICE" is unleashed.

Overall, I will grade this album an 'A+'. It is a well-crafted effort that encompasses the classical soul of Jennifer's voice while weaving in the urban pop sound of today. This hodge podge of sound works. It works well.
